How Do ZK-Rollups Work?

ZK-rollups enhance blockchain scalability by reducing the amount of data that needs to be posted on-chain. Instead of recording every transaction on the main blockchain (layer-1), ZK-rollups bundle multiple transactions together and process them off-chain. These bundled transactions are then summarized and “rolled up” into a single batch, which is submitted to the layer-1 blockchain along with a validity proof. This proof, created using zero-knowledge cryptography, mathematically guarantees that the state changes resulting from the transactions are correct without revealing the details of the transactions themselves.

The overall state of the ZK-rollup is managed by a smart contract on the layer-1 network. When a user makes a transaction on the ZK-rollup, it is typically sent to a layer-2 operator, who includes it in the next batch of transactions. Alternatively, ZK-rollups can use a proof-of-stake system where the task of executing and bundling transactions is shared among a group of validators who have staked funds in a rollup contract.
